AAJ Holds Seminar over Mirena, an IUD Linked to Serious Complications in Women

By John Cooper, Virginia Beach Dangerous Drugs Attorney

Today the American Association for Justice held a teleseminar to discuss lawsuits involving the Mirena Intrauterine Device.

I have written about a lot of dangerous medication and devices this year, but the problems caused by this product are less talked about in legal circles than DePuy hip implants or transvaginal mesh, for example.

This may be about to change and we can expect many lawsuits ahead.

“Produced by Bayer Corporation, this IUD has been shown to spontaneously perforate the uterine wall and migrate outside the uterus, requiring surgery for removal and in certain cases, results in organ damage, adhesions, and infection,” states the AAJ

The teleseminar explored Bayer’s failure to warn of the dangers as well as the potential complications associated with “spontaneous migration of the device,” which is not listed as a warning on the device’s label.

The side effects of Mirena can be truly frightening. There have been documented cases of women suffering from uterine perforation and women who have become pregnant while using it may suffer a miscarriage.

Sadly devices and medicines that have horrendous side effects are all too common. Drug companies are more interested in the bottom line than keeping patients safe.

I have in the past reported on the dangers of birth control medication such as Yaz and DES, a drug intended to prevent miscarriages decades ago, that has now been linked to cancer.

As experienced Virginia Beach product liability lawyers we see a myriad of problems caused in a range of products. The side effects of drugs that fail to do what they say they will do but cause other horrendous problems, are among the most serious product liability cases.
