VA Beach Injury Lawyer Report : Traffic Safety Signs in Virginia Beach Spark Opposition on Shore Drive

By John Cooper, Virginia Beach, VA Personal Injury Lawyer

As an experienced Virginia Beach car accident injury lawyer I’m in favor of the idea of traffic signs that can warn drivers of congestion, accidents and other dangerous situations.

But it seems the scale and obtrusiveness of these particular signs means they may be doing more harm than good.

Electronic signs spark anger in VB

WAVY.com reported some residents on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach have been taken aback by the scale of the huge electronic signs and the fact one of them is in a front yard.

The city is putting up eight tall LED message boards on Shore Drive close to the Lesner Bridge, around high traffic areas.

“City officials say they will use the message boards to alert drivers to traffic changes, congestion, and even amber alerts,” reported WAVY.

Originally the signs were intended to go in a business intensive area. Instead they are showing up close to homes and Virginia Beach residents are branding them an eyesore.

“We didn’t know that sign was going to be here. I came out of the house one day and they’ve got a six foot hole across the street. I’m thinking what’s in the hole, what’s in the hole, what’s going to go in this great big six foot hole? Behold it’s a huge sign. I had no idea there was going to be a sign there,” Shore Drive resident Mary Lee Sawyer told WAVY.

Three of eight signs are on Shore Drive: one is in front of the Sawyer’s home near Bayville Road, another one stands at the entrance to First Landing State Park and the third is near the 83rd Street intersection.

Officials say they plan to put up guardrails and paint the poles on the message boards black to make them less garish.

Removal of message boards does not appear to be an option at present.
