When airliners crash the consequences can be catastrophic. That’s why as an experienced Virginia Beach personal injury attorney, I was alarmed by the scenes from Newark, New Jersey on the night of February, 27, 2012 when a commercial airliner made an emergency landing, skidding across the tarmac on its nose.
Fortunately there were no casualties in this incident but smoke was visible on the runway as the aircraft landed on its belly.
“Fire and police units rushed to the airfield along with ambulances, but there were no fatalities or injuries, according to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) ,” WTKR.com reported.
As Virginia Beach accident injury attorneys with offices in Norfolk and Virginia Beach not far away from Norfolk International Airport, we are always acutely aware of the risks of an air crash, although crashes in aviation are fortunately rare.
Nevertheless, there has been some evidence in recent years of pilot errors causing air crashes. An investigation into an air crash in 2009 in which an Air France Airbus 330 en route to Brazil ditched in the Atlantic killing all 228 people on board, found the pilots were not adequately trained.
While crashes of large commercial airliners are few and far between there have been a number of crashes of light planes recorded in Virginia in recent years including a crash in Suffolk in 2009 that left three men injured but lucky to be alive.
Not all of the operators of light planes have been so lucky.
